In House Lab Draws Q & A

What is an in-house lab draw station?

The in-house lab draw station at Paradise Family Practice is where the team draws blood for in-depth blood testing and diagnostics. If you need a blood test, you don’t need to leave the office and go to another location for a safe blood draw.

Sometimes, you need to follow some steps in preparation for a blood draw. The team tells you if your test requires you to fast before the procedure or take any other precautions. However, in many cases, you can go straight to the lab without any preparation.

The team at Paradise Family Practice makes the process as simple and comfortable as possible.

What kinds of testing happens during in-house lab draws?

Blood draw tests are a valuable tool for diagnosing and monitoring various diseases and conditions. They can help you find out if a particular treatment is working or if you need to adjust your treatment plan.

Here are some specific tests you might need to use the on-site lab draw station for:

  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • Basic metabolic panel
  • Complete metabolic panel
  • Lipid panel
  • Thyroid panel
  • Coagulation panel
  • Blood enzyme tests
  • Glucose tests

Depending on the test, Cassie tells you when you can expect the results. Once the results are ready, she interprets them for you and let you know if they indicate the need for a change in your treatment, a new treatment, or further testing of any kind.

What should I expect during an in-house lab draw?

Getting a blood draw is a standard procedure, no matter what kind of tests you need for your blood. The blood draw itself only takes a few minutes and involves very little discomfort, so there’s no need to worry about numbing your skin beforehand.

Your technician cleans a spot on your arm after locating a substantial vein. They usually encourage you to offer up your non-dominant arm for the test and tie a band around it so they can see the veins clearly.

The technician then inserts a needle connected to a tube in your vein. After a sample of blood exits your arm through the tube, the technician places either a bandage or a clean piece of cotton with medical tape over the draw site to stop the bleeding.
